DEATH OF THE LATE VICAR OF HUCKNALL TORKARD

The death is announced on one of the oldest clergy in the diocese, the Rev. George Otter, M.A., late Vicar of Hucknall Torkard, who died at his residence at Radcliffe-on-Trent yesterday morning, in the 82nd year of his age.

The deceased gentleman, who was the representative of an old Nottinghamshire family, formerly seated at Welham, near East Retford, was the eldest surviving son of the late Rev. Edward Otter, M.A., J.P., Rector of Bothal and Hebburn, in Northumberland, and Prebendary of York, whose younger brother, the Right Rev. William Otter, D.D., was the first Principal of King's College, London, and became Bishop of Chichester in 1836.

The Rev. George Otter was born at Bolsover Castle, the then residence of his father, April 10th, 1803, and was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he graduated as B.A. in 1826 and M.A. in the following year.

Having taken holy orders he was subsequently presented to the vicarage of All Saints, Newmarket, which preferment he ultimately resigned for a colonial chaplaincy.

In 1862 he was presented by the late Duke of Portland to the vicarage of Hucknall Torkard, holding that benefice for upwards of 16 years, during which period the parish church was restored and enlarged, and the mission church at Butler's Hill was erected. Having resigned the living, owing to advanced age and infirmity, he left Hucknall and has since resided at Radcliffe-on-Trent.

His remains are to be interred in the family vault at Cuckney on Thursday next.
